چکیده

Vortical structures like the Λ-vortex and ring-like vortex play a critical role in the boundary layer transition process. In this paper, the mechanisms of the formation of the vortical packets and their mutual interactions are studied by DNS. It is found that the shear layer instability is the key of the vortex generation. On the other hand, in the process of evolution of vortical packets, the vortical structures(including vortex tubes and other kind of rotation cores) will continue to create high shear layers in the boundary layer by both sweeps and ejections. The generation and evolution process of the first ring-like vortex structure is studied in detail.

Turbulence mechanism in Klebanoff transition: a quantitative comparison of experiment and direct numerical simulation

The mechanism of turbulence development in periodic Klebanoff transition in a boundary layer has been studied experimentally and in a direct numerical simulation (DNS) with controlled disturbance excitation. In order to compare the results quantitatively, the flow parameters were matched in both methods, thus providing complementary data with which the origin of turbulence in the transition pro...

Visualization and Tracking of Vortices and Shear Layers in the Late Stages of Boundary-Layer Laminar-Turbulent Transition

The purpose of this contribution is to present some examples for the use of recent data processing and visualization techniques for the study of unsteady vortical flows. The basic idea is to extract vortices, shear layers and data defining their current state from DNS data and to track their evolution in time. Some apparent signatures which help to get additional insight into the flow dynamics ...

Analytic Solution for Hypersonic Flow Past a Slender Elliptic Cone Using Second-Order Perturbation Approximations

An approximate analytical solution is obtained for hypersonic flow past a slender elliptic cone using second-order perturbation techniques in spherical coordinate systems. The analysis is based on perturbations of hypersonic flow past a circular cone aligned with the free stream, the perturbations stemming from the small cross-section eccentricity. By means of hypersonic approximations for the ...

Detection and Tracking of Coherent Features in a Mach 4 Turbulent Boundary Layer

The detection and tracking of coherent vortical structures in a turbulent compressible boundary layer is considered. Several vortex identification methods are evaluated. It is found that for this flow, the discriminant of the characteristic polynomial of the velocity gradient tensor is the most useful. It tends to highlight vortical structures that are located farther from the wall, and the fea...

PIV Investigation into the Evolution of Vortical Structures in the Zero Pressure Gradient Boundary Layer

Experimental investigation has been carried out towards understanding the complex fluid dynamics involved in the interaction of vortical structures with zero pressure gradient boundary layer. A laminar boundary layer is produced on the flat plate placed in the water flume and the synthetic jet actuator is deployed on top of the plate at a definite distance from the leading edge. The synthetic j...
